Customs to auction 14,375 litres of smuggled petrol in Cross River
The Nigeria Customs Service plans to auction 14,375 litres of smuggled petrol intercepted by its Special Anti-Smuggling Taskforce in Cross River.
The Nigeria Customs Service has announced its intention to auction a significant quantity of smuggled petrol amounting to 14,375 litres, seized from smugglers attempting to transport the fuel to Cameroon. This seizure was executed by the Special Anti-Smuggling Taskforce, Operation Whirlwind, which has been operational in the Calabar area. According to DCC Abubakar Aliyu, the National Coordinator of the taskforce in Zone C, the seized products have a Duty Paid Value of approximately N14,375,000.
The operation leading to this seizure highlights the ongoing challenges of fuel smuggling in Nigeria, particularly towards neighboring countries like Cameroon. Abubakar Aliyu noted that the taskforce acted upon credible intelligence that enabled them to dismantle a network involved in the illegal exportation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The taskforce intercepted a substantial volume of petrol contained in 235 jerry-cans and 40 drums, emphasizing the scale of smuggling activities within this region of Nigeria.
Nigerian authorities are continually facing issues with fuel smuggling due to the country's regulated fuel prices, which make illegal exports lucrative for smugglers. This auction reflects the governmentβs commitment to tackle fuel smuggling and maintain control over fuel distribution within the country, and it serves as a warning to potential smugglers regarding the consequences of their actions. The auction is expected to contribute to national revenues while underscoring the importance of vigilance in border management and law enforcement efforts.
