Navy destroys illegal refinery in Rivers, intercepts stolen fuel in C’Rivers
The Nigerian Navy has intensified operations against crude oil theft by destroying an illegal refinery in Rivers State and intercepting stolen fuel in Calabar.
The Nigerian Navy has ramped up efforts to combat crude oil theft and illegal bunkering in Nigeria's oil-rich regions. Recently, personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH executed a successful operation, demolishing an illegal refinery at Okolomade Community in the Rivers State area. This action was prompted by reliable intelligence that indicated the area, previously dismantled, had resumed illegal oil refining activities.
According to Capt Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, the anti-crude oil theft team found extensive illegal operations upon deployment to the site. Notably, they discovered that the dismantled oil refining oven had been reassembled, highlighting the resilience and adaptation of illegal operators in the region. Additional inspections yielded more evidence of illegal operations, including the discovery of refining equipment and an estimated 3,000 liters of petroleum products suspected to be stolen.
This operation underscores the persistent challenges the Nigerian authorities face in curbing oil theft, which has significant implications for the country's economy. Oil theft not only affects revenues but also poses environmental and security risks. The Navy's proactive approach reflects a broader strategy to safeguard Nigeria's vast oil resources and maintain law and order in the region, aiming to deter future illegal activities and bolster public confidence in governance and security.
