Navy arrests nine suspected oil thieves in Akwa Ibom
The Nigerian Navy has captured nine individuals suspected of illegal oil theft in Akwa Ibom State.
The Nigerian Navy reported the arrest of nine suspected oil thieves who were involved in illicit bunkering activities in Akwa Ibom State. The arrests were made by operatives from NNS Jubilee in joint operations with other naval units, specifically Nigerian Navy Ship BONNY and Nigerian Navy Ship SHIRORO, on February 23, 2026. This operation targeted an offshore oil platform located in the Asabo oil field where the suspects were allegedly siphoning crude oil.
Commodore Mohammed Manga, the Commander of NNS Jubilee, provided details regarding the arrests during a transfer of the suspects and related exhibits to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area. The captured crew was discovered attempting to siphon oil from a vessel and were operating using a wooden boat that was also recovered during the operation.
