[Breaking News] The plan for a national investigation into the allegations of 'manipulated prosecution by Yoon Seok-yeol' passes the National Assembly
The National Assembly of South Korea has approved a national investigation plan concerning allegations of manipulated prosecutions under President Yoon Seok-yeol's administration.
On the 22nd, the National Assembly of South Korea passed the 'Approval of the National Investigation Plan for Clarifying the Allegations of Manipulated Prosecution by the Political Prosecutors of the Yoon Seok-yeol Regime.' This approval initiates a 50-day investigation to commence from May 8, aimed at examining manipulated investigations and prosecutions concerning seven cases, including corruption allegations linked to President Lee Jae-myung's involvement in major development scandals.
The approval came after a vote that effectively ended a filibuster initiated by the ruling People Power Party, which chose to abstain from the vote. The investigations will scrutinize multiple significant scandals, such as the Daejang-dong development preferential treatment allegations, the Wirye New City development corruption allegations, and others involving the previous and current administrations, pivotally highlighting the tensions between political parties. The investigation aims to uncover potential misconduct in the prosecution of these cases.
A special committee led by Democratic Party member Seo Young-kyo has been formed, consisting of eleven members from the Democratic Party, seven from the People Power Party, and two from other minor parties. Despite agreeing to the formation of the committee, the People Power Party opposes the investigation, claiming it's politically charged and could disrupt ongoing legal proceedings. They argue that the investigation is primarily intended to provide political cover for including President Lee’s tangled cases in this context, raising critical discussions on the intersection of politics and justice in South Korea.
