‘Yoon Seok-yeol Prosecutor’s Office’ Fabricated Indictments Special Committee Approves Investigation Plan Led by Democratic Party
The National Assembly's Special Committee on the Investigation of Fabricated Indictments under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, led by the Democratic Party, approved an investigation plan on October 20.
On October 20, the National Assembly's Special Committee on the Investigation of Fabricated Indictments during the Yoon Seok-yeol administration adopted an investigation plan predominantly led by the Democratic Party. This marks a significant development as the committee held its first plenary session, selecting its chairperson and discussing the investigation plan. Members of the main opposition party, the Democratic Party, took charge of the voting process, which led to a walkout by members of the ruling People Power Party, who objected to what they termed an unilateral approach to the investigation and the selection of targets.
The investigation plan specifies a wide range of incidents to be investigated, including significant allegations associated with various high-profile cases such as the Daejang-dong incident, the Wirye incident, and the alleged North Korean remittances scandal. Furthermore, the plan also seeks to scrutinize the organized involvement of the prosecution, Ministry of Justice, and the presidential office in these cases, raising serious concerns about potential political manipulation and accountability within the Yoon administration.
The inquiry is scheduled to last for 50 days, from October 20 until May 8, just before the local elections on June 3. Despite a majority in the committee being from the Democratic Party, the People Power Party has indicated its opposition to the overall inquiry while participating in the committee. Critically, members from the ruling party expressed their discontent with the committee's proceedings, asserting that the investigation targets should be reevaluated and suggesting bias in the Democratic Party’s approach, raising questions on the integrity and objectivity of the investigation process as the political landscape heats up toward the local elections.
