Song Eon-seok to Woo Won-sik: 'The Special Committee on Investigation of Manipulated Prosecution is an Abuse of Legislative Power'

The leader of South Korea's People Power Party criticized the formation of a special committee to investigate alleged manipulated prosecutions by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, describing it as biased legislative overreach.

Song Eon-seok, the leader of the People Power Party, voiced strong opposition to the formation of a National Assembly special committee seeking to investigate allegations of manipulated prosecutions by the administration of President Yoon Suk-yeol. Speaking after a visit to the National Assembly Speaker's office, he accused Speaker Woo Won-sik of abusing legislative power in a biased manner, as he perceives the initiative to be fundamentally flawed and politically motivated. Song raised concerns over the potential ramifications of treating the prosecutions as indisputable for political advantage, suggesting such a course of action could jeopardize impartial legislative processes.

In his remarks, Song emphasized that the establishment of this special committee appears to be heavily influenced by partisan interests, especially regarding the President Lee Jae-myung and ongoing criminal allegations against him. He expressed apprehension that the committee’s operations could be centered around pressuring the prosecution to withdraw charges against Lee. While acknowledging the Speaker's stance that the investigations should proceed, Song firmly disagreed with the position that these allegations should be formally assessed through a National Investigation.

Looking ahead, Song stated a commitment to ensure that if the special committee moves forward, members of his party will participate actively in an effort to address what they see as significant flaws in its proceedings. He conveyed plans to gather consensus among party members to establish a definitive position during an upcoming party meeting, indicating that this issue will be pivotal in shaping their legislative strategy as it intersects with broader discussions on governance and accountability in South Korea.
