Nigeria: Vandals Knock Down Tower T99 Along Ughelli/Benin 330kv Transmission Line
A transmission tower (T99) in Nigeria's Delta State collapsed due to vandalism, causing disruption in power supply from Transcorp Power Plc to the national grid.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported that Tower T99 along the Ughelli/Benin 330 kilovolt transmission line collapsed as a result of vandalism. This incident was discovered during a line patrol in the Coconut Village area of Warri, Delta State, following a trip in the power line. TCN's General Manager for Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, explained that the inspection revealed that some bracing members of the tower had been vandalized and removed, contributing to its collapse.
The incident also affected the adjoining towers, T100 and T101, which were found to be vandalized as well, although they remained standing. This act of vandalism has temporarily disrupted the evacuation of bulk power supply from Transcorp Power Plc into the national grid through the Benin transmission line. TCN has indicated that it is mobilizing resources to begin the reconstruction of the damaged tower to restore normal power supplies as quickly as possible.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of infrastructure security in Nigeria, especially concerning vital utilities like electricity. Vandalism poses a significant threat to the country's energy sector, not only causing immediate disruptions but also increasing maintenance costs and recovery times for the utility providers. As TCN works to resolve this issue, it underscores the need for greater security measures to protect critical energy infrastructure from similar threats in the future.
