Man electrocuted while vandalising Enugu DisCo substation

A vandal was electrocuted while attempting to steal cables from a substation in Enugu State, Nigeria.

In Enugu State, Nigeria, a yet-to-be-identified individual was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a substation owned by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited. The incident occurred at the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation on Independence Avenue. It was reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, and the Head of Communications for MEDL, Emeka Ezeh, confirmed the tragic event, stating that the body of the suspect was found within the substation premises early on Tuesday morning.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had managed to loosen two intermediate cables as part of his vandalism attempt. However, it was during the attempt to disconnect a third cable that electricity supply was unexpectedly restored, resulting in his electrocution. Emeka Ezeh described the event as unfortunate and noted the risks involved in such illegal activities, highlighting that acts of vandalism are not only dangerous but also disrupt essential services to the community.

Ezeh further indicated that the deceased was likely not working alone, as two of the vandalized cables were found missing, implying that accomplices may have fled the scene with them. This incident raises concerns about the safety and security of electrical installations in the region, as vandalism endangers not only the perpetrators but also the general public and the provision of reliable electrical services in Enugu State.
