The total export of Latvia's forestry sector is stagnating

The Latvian forestry company 'Grantiņi' faces stagnation in exports, with over 90% of its production going to Japan and increasing costs impacting profitability.

The Latvian forestry sector is currently experiencing stagnation in exports, with companies like 'Grantiņi' highlighting challenges stemming from increased operational costs. This company, which has over 33 years of experience in the forestry business, employs more than 200 people and operates throughout the entire forestry cycle from logging to wood processing. Aldis Stūriška, the chairman of 'Grantiņi 1', stated that they are currently sawing close to one million cubic meters of round wood annually, with production set to increase post-reconstruction due to enhanced new equipment.

Approximately 90% of 'Grantiņi's products are exported to Japan, with only a small portion remaining in Latvia, notably pellets. Last year, the company reported a turnover of 41 million euros, but rising costs, particularly for fuel, have significantly impacted profits. The current economic environment is cautious for the company as growth is hampered by competition and poor road conditions, necessitating the creation of reserves to prevent production standstill. The chairman referred to more than 50% of the roads in Latvia as 'mud roads' due to their poor state, indicating the challenges faced in logistics and transportation.

This stagnation in the forestry export sector poses serious implications for the Latvian economy, considering the substantial reliance on forestry exports. As the cost of operation continues to increase, companies within this sector must navigate a complex landscape of competition, operational inefficiencies, and infrastructure challenges to maintain profitability and ensure sustainable growth. The careful monitoring of the market conditions and adaptation to these challenges will be key for firms like 'Grantiņi' to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
