A completely new type of public transport is planned to be implemented in Vilnius
Vilnius is preparing to introduce a new mode of public transport to address growing mobility demands as the current system reaches its limits.
In Vilnius, plans are underway to develop a new type of public transport in response to the city's growing population and mobility needs. According to transport company representatives, preparations are starting for the drafting of preliminary proposals that will assess potential directions for urban mobility development. These proposals, expected to be completed by mid-next year, are essential for long-term transport planning in the city.
The head of the transport company, Loreta Levulytė-Staškevičienė, emphasized that the growth of Vilnius and the demands of its residents necessitate looking beyond the current wheeled transport options. The existing public transport system is nearing its operational limits, indicating that planning for a new transport mode is not just an option but a necessity to prevent future traffic paralysis in the city.
An essential aspect of implementing this new transport option will be to provide alternatives for public transport usage while reducing traffic congestion. The planning phase will focus on minimizing the new transport vehicle's interference with existing road traffic and exploring options for its location, such as underground, at ground level, or parallel to regular traffic. This approach aims to enhance public transport accessibility and provide more efficient travel alternatives for residents, contributing to the overall improvement of urban mobility in Vilnius.
