Starting September, Ukrainians will travel for free on Vilnius public transport only with the 'Ukrainian Card'
From September, Ukrainians in Vilnius can use public transport for free by obtaining a special 'Ukrainian Card' starting March 1.
Beginning in September, Ukrainians living in Vilnius will be able to utilize public transportation for free, provided they possess a specially designated 'Ukrainian Card,' which is set to be issued starting March 1. This initiative was announced by the Vilnius public transport authority, JUDU, emphasizing the need for quick integration and support for individuals affected by the war in Ukraine. The card aims to simplify access to public transport while maintaining clear benefits for eligible users.
The requirement for the 'Ukrainian Card' was established by the Vilnius City Council in December of the previous year, highlighting a shift towards a more organized and equitable system for providing transit support to war refugees. Loreta Levulytė-Staškevičienė, the head of JUDU, noted that the card would effectively decrease the necessity for refugees to present their passports or other documentation each time they use public transport. This development seeks to enhance the experience for Ukrainians and ensure that their transportation needs are met seamlessly.
The card will be available at a nominal fee of one and a half euros, making it accessible for those in need. This regulation follows the establishment of free public transport for Ukrainian war refugees in 2022, underscoring the city's commitment to aiding these individuals in navigating their new environment while fostering a sense of community and stability amidst ongoing challenges stemming from the conflict in Ukraine.
