Kaunas is creating something that no other city in Lithuania has had: 'This is just the beginning'
The city of Kaunas is initiating a cultural competition that invites artists to propose ideas for public spaces, which are then funded by the local government.
The 'Kauno akcentai' competition has been running since 2017 in Kaunas, Lithuania, inviting artists to present proposals for public spaces. This initiative focuses on selecting projects including sculptures, design objects, lighting installations, and street art, with about 150 projects realized since its inception. The city council backs the implementation of approved projects, emphasizing the importance of art in urban development.
Professor Stasys Žirgulis, one of Lithuania's renowned sculptors, speaks about the profound role of culture in building bridges between nations and shaping city identity. His extensive experience of over 50 years in Kaunas, participating in international symposiums and earning recognition, has significantly influenced his artistic vision. He reflects on the concept of art as a vital asset in urban environments, highlighting its potential to transform public spaces into cultural hubs.
The ongoing competition not only fosters artistic creation but also aims to strengthen the cultural vibrancy of Kaunas. With the active support from the local government, such initiatives demonstrate the city’s commitment to enhancing its artistic landscape and establishing itself as a pioneering force in Lithuania's cultural scene.
