The city of Kaunas has officially approved its budget for the year 2026, which includes substantial investments across various sectors aimed at addressing the daily needs of its residents. According to municipal sources, the proposed budget prioritizes education, infrastructure development, social services, and health care as the main focus areas for the upcoming year. The increase in budgetary allocation is expected to facilitate both the continuation of existing projects and the initiation of new ones aligned with the community’s needs.
Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis was quoted in the announcement, emphasizing that the growing budget indicates a strengthening city economy. He stated that the focus is on sustainable investments rather than short-term solutions, highlighting the importance of creating long-term value for both the city and its inhabitants. This strategic approach to fiscal planning reflects the city’s commitment to developing a resilient economic framework.
In terms of budget allocation, the largest portion, approximately 389.4 million euros or 46.6%, is dedicated to education. Additionally, 190.2 million euros (22.8%) will be utilized for infrastructure and maintenance, while nearly 100 million euros (11.9%) is earmarked for social services and health. The remaining funds will support sports, general state services, culture, heritage, and environmental protection, demonstrating a holistic approach to urban governance.
