Heritage index of municipalities announced: Kaunas continues to lead in cultural heritage protection

Kaunas is recognized for its cultural heritage protection efforts, being a leader in Lithuania according to the newly announced heritage index.

A newly released heritage index for municipalities in Lithuania has placed Kaunas at the forefront of cultural heritage protection. The city is highlighted for its growing recognition and appreciation of its heritage by locals, tourists, and international visitors, marking it as one of the five cities in Lithuania recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. This recognition is attributed to a combination of consistent efforts, clear priorities, and significant investments from the municipal budget, particularly through the Heritage Management Program, which funds important heritage projects such as the reconstruction of the Kaunas fortifications.

Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis emphasized that the city has successfully attracted funding from various sources, resulting in a more beautiful city while ensuring the cultivation and adaptation of its heritage to meet contemporary needs. The city boasts an impressive number of heritage sites, totaling 1,873, along with one of the highest densities of heritage objects in Lithuania. This considerable number contributes significantly to the city’s identity and adds value for visiting tourists, enhancing their experience.

According to the Municipal Heritage Index data, Kaunas continues to lead in terms of allocated financing for cultural heritage protection, showcasing a commitment to preserving its historical treasures. The ongoing efforts to maintain and restore heritage sites not only preserve history but also promote tourism and community engagement, ensuring that Kaunas remains a vibrant cultural destination in Lithuania and beyond.
