A huge amount of snow hit Finland – here there is still a meter of snow
Finland experiences a significant snowfall, with regions in the north measuring up to a meter of snow, while southern areas report much less.
As spring approaches, Finland had a surprise snowfall on Friday, particularly affecting northern regions. In Kilpisjärvi, there was a recorded snow depth of exactly 100 centimeters according to Foreca meteorologist Ilkka Alanko, indicating that some localized areas might have even more. In contrast, the weather forecast predicts rain and sleet for the day, suggesting that the snow accumulation is likely to decrease as temperatures rise.
The snow was not limited to Kilpisjärvi; nearby Kittilä also reported significant snow amounts, with Pokka measuring 79 centimeters. Alanko mentioned that the snow coverage extends approximately to the height of Kuusamo, with much less snow observed in the southern regions of Finland. For instance, in Jyväskylä, only about 9 centimeters of snow was reported, while eastern Finland saw even lesser amounts, with Ilomantsi measuring 3 centimeters and Tohmajärvi 5 centimeters.
In southern Finland, including the Helsinki metropolitan area, snow depths were negligible, mostly around zero, illustrating the stark contrast between the northern and southern parts of the country due to varying weather patterns. This significant amplitude in snow levels across Finland highlights the ongoing fluctuations of winter weather as the country moves toward spring, potentially impacting local activities and lifestyles, especially in heavily snowed areas.
