Danjong is Reborn through Music... Theme Song for 'Danjong Cultural Festival' to be Revealed on April 24

The life of Danjong, a tragic king, will be reinterpreted through music with the theme song of the upcoming Danjong Cultural Festival set to premiere on April 24.

The Danjong Cultural Festival, set to take place in Yeongwol-gun, South Korea, will reveal its theme song, 'Rebirth,' on April 24 during its 59th opening ceremony. This year, the festival aims to transform through music the tragic history of King Danjong, who died at a young age during his exile, into a symbol of hope. The song, with its accompanying music video, marks a significant collaboration with internationally recognized pianist and composer Yang Bang-ean, who draws on both traditional and contemporary musical elements to evoke a sense of revival.

Yeongwol-gun, where Danjong spent his final days, has been celebrating his memory since 1967 with local efforts to honor his legacy through various cultural events, including rituals and reenactments. By producing this theme song, the organizers hope to elevate the festival's status to a 'global celebration,' leveraging interest generated by the recent hit film 'The King’s Affection.' The theme for this year’s festival, 'The King’s Return, The Prologue of Hope,' signifies the shift from viewing Danjong merely as a tragic figure to recognizing him as a symbol of resilience and hope, with an array of programs structured around this concept.

Yang Bang-ean expressed his commitment to transforming this tragic history into a festival that resonates with contemporary audiences, emphasizing a narrative flow from tragedy to hope. He aims to showcase a new musical approach through the integration of traditional instruments with a Western orchestra and piano, reflecting the essence of the theme 'rebirth.' The opening ceremony on April 24 will also feature a special lecture by director Jang Hang-joon, heralding a three-day festival filled with cultural significance and community engagement.
