Special Exhibition on Danjong and Eom Heung-do Seen Through Historical Documents at the National Library from the 24th

The National Library of Korea will hold a special exhibition revealing historical documents related to King Danjong and Eom Heung-do, starting from the 24th of this month.

A surge in public interest in King Danjong and Eom Heung-do, catalyzed by the success of the film 'The King’s Affection', has led the National Library of Korea to unveil significant historical documents highlighting Eom Heung-do's loyalty. The exhibition will run from the 24th of this month to the 19th of the following month, showcasing a rare 'complete document' issued by the military in 1733, which exempts Eom Heung-do's descendants from military and labor duties. This document serves as a testament to how the state honored Eom Heung-do's loyalty and treated his descendants, representing a valuable historical asset.

In addition to the official document, the exhibition will feature six original historical texts related to Danjong and Eom Heung-do, including portions of 'Danjong Sillok' and 'Sejo Sillok', which describe the exile process of King Danjong. The display will also include various editions of the historical novel 'Danjong Ae-Sa' written by Lee Kwang-soo, allowing visitors to engage with Danjong's tragic life through literary works. Further, biographies detailing Eom Heung-do's life, such as 'Jeungchamun Eom Gong Silgi' (1817) and 'Chungui Gong Silgi' (1936), will also be showcased.

The exhibition aims to provide a multidimensional perspective on these historical figures through diverse literary materials. According to Hyewon Hyun, the curator of ancient documents at the National Library, the initiative hopes to foster a connection between the public's interest in historical figures, sparked by cinematic portrayals, and the appreciation of valuable cultural heritage embodied in historical documents.
