Rēzekne's pensioners' social services center will not be handed over to a private company
The social care center for pensioners in Rēzekne will remain public, continuing to provide services to its residents despite rising costs.
The social care center in Rēzekne serves as a home for 185 seniors, providing them with daily activities and a peaceful environment. According to Deputy Director Olga Jezerska, residents participate in cognitive-enhancing activities and regularly enjoy walks, although the center has recently increased its monthly maintenance fee from 805 to 1012 euros. Despite the financial strain, the local government covers 15% of these costs for each resident, with some family members also contributing to the expenses, albeit in limited numbers.
Recent cosmetic renovations have improved living conditions, but further renovations are necessary to maintain the center's structure. Inese Nipere, head of the social services department in Rēzekne, explained that the municipality currently lacks the necessary funding for extensive renovations, leading to concerns about the sustainability of quality care for residents. The decision to keep the center public reflects a broader commitment to ensuring essential services for the elderly population.
The implications of this decision are significant, as it underscores the local government's role in supporting the aging population amidst rising care costs. By maintaining public ownership, Rēzekne aims to ensure that the care services are affordable and accessible to those who need them most. However, the challenge of funding improvements and addressing financial pressures remains a pressing issue for the local authorities and the community they serve.
