Collectives in Rēzekne try to perform under a leaky roof; the municipality promises once again to renovate the cultural center

Cultural collectives in Rēzekne continue to operate in a deteriorating cultural center despite ongoing promises from the municipality for renovations, which remain unfulfilled after 13 years.

Twelve years ago, the municipality of Rēzekne promised to reconstruct the cultural center, a commitment made when the concert hall 'Gors' was inaugurated amidst complaints of ongoing issues like a leaking roof and peeling walls. Yet, more than a decade later, the renovation has yet to commence, leaving community arts groups to work in inhospitable conditions characterized by water damage and recurring flooding, especially after recent snowy winters.

The director of the Rēzekne Cultural and Tourism Center, Kristīne Kokoreviča, revealed that this year's severe weather led to unprecedented flooding in the cultural center, which has not only affected the building's infrastructure but also led to the partial shutdown of its electricity and damage to wooden flooring. While the situation has improved slightly — with water no longer streaming from the ceilings — the center still contains various vessels to catch the remaining leaks, highlighting the extent of the building's decline.

Local residents and cultural collectives are frustrated as they confront annual issues without substantial action from the municipality. Kokoreviča emphasized that the critical condition of the cultural center cannot be overlooked any longer, as it has become a recurring theme of neglect despite the high hopes for renovation expressed by local authorities, leaving the community questioning the future of local arts in such deteriorating spaces.
