N24bn public projects abandoned in states – Report
A report by BudgIT revealed that approximately N24 billion worth of public projects have been abandoned or fraudulently delivered across several Nigerian states.
A recent analysis by BudgIT's monitoring platform, Tracka, has exposed a significant issue of unexecuted and abandoned public projects throughout Nigeria, totaling around N24 billion. The 2024/2025 report highlights that certain states are particularly affected, with Benue State leading the way with 40% of its projects abandoned, followed by Ondo, Kwara, Akwa Ibom, and Sokoto, all showing alarming rates of non-completion. This situation indicates a serious problem in governmental accountability and project management.
The report, unveiled in February 2026, sheds light on the widespread mismanagement of funds allocated for public service delivery. Together, Benue, Ondo, Kwara, Akwa Ibom, and Sokoto accounted for over a quarter of the total unexecuted projects, representing considerable amounts of financial misallocation. In a broader context, this problem can lead to a deterioration of public trust in government institutions and greater scrutiny of how public funds are utilized.
With a significant portion of projects tied to unexecuted funds, there is a critical need for accountability and effective governance in order to address these issues and restore faith in public service delivery. Local governments, civil society groups, and watchdog organizations are urged to work collaboratively to ensure that such large-scale abandonment of public projects does not continue, to ensure that funding is effectively utilized to benefit the citizens who rely on these essential services.
