Highway danger: Oyo students beg FERMA for speed breakers
Students from Baptist Secondary Grammar School in Oyo State are urging the government to install speed breakers due to safety concerns on a busy road.
Students from Baptist Secondary Grammar School, located in Ago-Aare, Oyo State, have recently made a public appeal to the Federal Government demanding the installation of speed breakers and additional safety measures on the Ago-Aare–Saki road. This call for action follows mounting concerns over the dangers posed by speeding vehicles and large trucks that frequently travel the route. The students emphasize that the lack of proper traffic calming measures presents a significant risk to their safety, particularly at the school's entrance.
The students' appeal gained significant attention on social media, especially after a video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the handle Oyo M Esi Oro. In this video, four students, representing their peers and school staff, articulate their fears about the traffic hazards surrounding their school environment. One student, Ayantoye Emmanuel, acknowledged the Federal Government’s ongoing road rehabilitation efforts but insisted that without the installation of immediate safety measures such as speed breakers, accidents are likely to occur, putting their lives at risk.
The growing visibility of this appeal on social media highlights the concerns of young people regarding road safety and their active role in advocating for solutions. This situation underscores the broader issue of road safety in Nigeria, especially in areas with heavy traffic where vulnerable populations like schoolchildren are at risk. It reflects an urgent need for government action to address these safety challenges and protect students along key routes that are critical to their daily commute.
