FERMA promises safety measures on Oyo highway after students’ protest
The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency has pledged to implement safety measures on the Ago-Are/Saki road following protests by local students expressing concerns over road safety.
The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has responded to urgent safety concerns raised by students from Baptist Secondary Grammar School in Ago-Are, Oyo State, regarding the dangers of speeding vehicles and heavy-duty trucks along the newly rehabilitated Ago-Are/Saki road. During a recent protest, the students highlighted the perilous conditions they face daily, as the road runs directly in front of their school and has seen an increase in traffic due to its busy nature.
FERMA's commitment to action was articulated by engineer Olatunde Adepoju at the agency's Oyo State Field Office in Ibadan, where he addressed media inquiries following the student protests. The agency assures that safety measures such as speed breakers and other traffic-calming installations will be installed to mitigate risks on the road. The decision comes in light of the growing social media traction that the students' appeal has garnered, emphasizing the critical need for immediate intervention to safeguard their daily commutes.
This situation underscores a broader concern regarding road safety in Nigeria, particularly in areas where traffic from heavy-duty vehicles intersects with pedestrian zones like schools. The involvement of students in advocacy demonstrates a significant community engagement effort aimed at prompting governmental bodies to take swift action. As FERMA prepares to implement these safety measures, the outcome will be closely monitored by both locals and educational stakeholders to ensure that proper measures are effectively realized, ultimately contributing to safer road conditions in the region.
