Oyo advises residents, farmers on 2026 weather outlook, flood prevention
The Oyo State Government is urging residents and farmers to follow government advisories to prevent flooding as the rainy season approaches.
The Oyo State Government has issued a warning to residents and farmers in the state to increase their vigilance and adhere to government advisories to prevent flooding as the rainy season nears. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, who emphasized the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding lives and property. The advice is particularly timely as forecasts for 2026 suggest significant rainfall, prompting the need for preparedness.
In the statement, Aderinto highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to mitigate potential flooding risks. These include collaboration with the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency and the implementation of advanced flood early warning systems established through the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project, which is supported by the World Bank. The use of these systems aims to provide timely alerts to residents about possible flooding events, potentially saving lives and property from damage.
As part of these preventative measures, the ministry is also focused on improving the infrastructure by intensively clearing waterways, drainage systems, and rivers throughout the state. This proactive strategy is essential for reducing the impact of flooding and ensuring that the Oyo State community is better prepared to face the challenges posed by the upcoming rainy season, thereby fostering resilience among residents and supporting agricultural activities in the region.
