Martha Medeiros opens an art school to value the work of artisans

Designer Martha Medeiros inaugurated an art school in Alagoas aimed at promoting Brazilian artisanal techniques.

On Thursday, designer Martha Medeiros opened the 'Mãos de Martha' art school in Alagoas, Brazil, with the goal of highlighting and valuing traditional Brazilian crafts. The school features a large complex with three floors, an exhibition pavilion, outdoor areas, and 45 accommodations, catering especially to tourists along the Ecological Route of Milagres. Medeiros is well-known for her luxury fashion work, particularly her use of lace from northeastern Brazil, and hopes to infuse a similar appreciation for craftsmanship within the new educational space.

Martha's art school is designed with her personal touch, exemplified by her initiative to feature inspiring messages on the walls, such as "the future has an old heart." The ground floor of the complex showcases cultural artifacts from renowned artisans, including leatherworks by master craftsman Espedito Seleiro and pieces from embroiderers in Ceará. This attention to detail reflects her commitment to preserving and promoting Brazilian artisanal heritage.

The inauguration of the school is expected to draw attention from various authorities and celebrities, with a visit scheduled by dignitaries such as Regina Nunes, the First Lady of São Paulo, and Maria Elizabeth Rocha, the President of the Military Supreme Court. Their attendance signifies not only support for the arts in Brazil but also highlights the importance of sustainable tourism in preserving cultural and traditional craftsmanship in the region of Alagoas.
