Joint Investigation Team Questions Spouse of Lawmaker Jeon Jae-soo Regarding Allegations of Receiving Money from the Unification Church
The joint investigation team is questioning the spouse of lawmaker Jeon Jae-soo in connection with allegations of his receiving money from the Unification Church.
On October 18, the Joint Investigation Team, led by Chief Prosecutor Kim Tae-hoon, continued its probe into the alleged financial irregularities involving the Unification Church, by interviewing Jeon Jae-soo's spouse. The investigation focuses on claims that the lawmaker received cash amounting to 20 million won, as well as luxury watches worth 10 million won from the Unification Church during the years 2018 to 2019. Jeon has categorically denied these allegations despite the inquiry’s ongoing nature.
The Joint Investigation Team, which was established in January, has been scrutinizing various individuals linked to financial misconduct involving the Unification Church, yet it has not yet summoned Jeon as a suspect despite over two months since the investigation began. Several prominent figures, including former lawmaker Lim Jong-seong and Kim Gyu-hwan, president of Korea Coal Corporation, have already been called in for questioning regarding similar accusations of financial exchanges with the church, highlighting the broader implications of this controversy within political and corporate spheres.
Adding to the complexity of this situation, Jeon Jae-soo has recently registered as a preliminary candidate for the Busan mayoral election on October 13, intensifying the public and media scrutiny surrounding his political ambitions amidst these serious allegations. The unfolding investigation and its potential ramifications on Jeon’s political career could have significant consequences, suggesting a larger narrative about financial ethics in South Korean politics, especially involving influential organizations like the Unification Church.
