[Breaking News] Representative Jeon Jae-su Attends Investigation on 'Money Received from the Unification Church'
Representative Jeon Jae-su, accused of receiving large sums from the Unification Church, attended an investigation by the Joint Investigation Headquarters in Seoul.
On the 19th, Representative Jeon Jae-su of the Democratic Party of Korea, who is under suspicion of receiving millions of won in gifts from the Unification Church, appeared at the Joint Investigation Headquarters in Seocho District, Seoul. This is the first investigation conducted by the Headquarters since its establishment in January. Jeon expressed hope for a swift conclusion to the investigation, stating he would participate sincerely and noting that time was precious given the pressing matters ahead of him.
Jeon is under scrutiny for allegedly receiving 20 million won in cash and luxury watches valued at 10 million won from the Unification Church between 2018 and 2019. Authorities suspect that these gifts might be connected to Jeon's support for the church's goal of building an undersea tunnel between Korea and Japan. The investigation into the Unification Church's lobbying began based on claims made by former Universal Church headquarters executive Yoon Young-ho about exchanging significant amounts of money with various politicians, including Jeon.
The investigation has broadened, and authorities have been examining links not only to Jeon but also to other former lawmakers like Im Jong-sung and Kim Kyu-hwan, who have also been investigated for similar allegations. The police, having previously handled the investigation, transferred the case to the Joint Investigation Headquarters, which has been intensifying its inquiries, including interrogating Unification Church officials and even questioning Jeon's spouse as a witness in recent days.
