Jang Hang-jun: 'Thank you, Elder Eom Heung-do, I couldn’t do it'
Director Jang Hang-jun thanked historical figure Eom Heung-do for his brave actions in retrieving the body of the deposed king Danjong during a recent television appearance.
In a recent appearance on JTBC's 'Newsroom', director Jang Hang-jun expressed his deep gratitude towards Eom Heung-do, a historical figure who bravely retrieved the body of King Danjong during a time of great fear. Jang highlighted Eom's courageous spirit in the face of danger, particularly as he took it upon himself to care for the king's remains when others were afraid due to the revenge of Sejo. Jang's film, 'The King’s Affection', which creatively explores the relationship between Danjong and Eom, has resonated with audiences, as evidenced by its surpassing ten million viewers just days ago.
Jang reflected on why the film has been successful, attributing it to the depiction of Eom Heung-do’s unwavering loyalty and selflessness. He noted that in today's world, where calculations and self-interest are widespread, the older generations who acted for righteousness, risking their lives, provide a stark contrast and inspiration. He expressed a desire for such noble figures to exist in current times as role models for society.
When asked what he would have done if he were in Eom Heung-do’s position, Jang candidly stated that he would likely have sought refuge instead of acting courageously. He emphasized the importance of honoring independence fighters and patriots, underscoring the value of remembering those who stood up for righteousness. Jang also praised his cast members, especially Park Ji-hoon, who played Danjong, and Yoo Hae-jin, who portrayed Eom, recognizing their significant contributions to the film and the future of Korean cinema.
