[Exclusive] Descendants of Eom Heung-do Appeared in 'The King and the Man'

The film 'The King and the Man,' which tells the story of King Danjong and Eom Heung-do, has featured a direct descendant of Eom Heung-do.

The film 'The King and the Man' explores the tragic story of young King Danjong and Eom Heung-do, the historical figure known for collecting Danjong's corpse after he was ousted. Recently, it was revealed that Eom Heung-do's direct descendant, actress Eom Chun-mi, plays a role in this film. Eom Chun-mi, affiliated with the Cheongnyeon Theatre company based in Cheongju, portrays a villager in the film set in the village of Gwangcheon-gol in Gangwon-do, where Danjong was exiled. Eom Heung-do, known for his brave act of retrieving the fallen king’s body, famously stated that he did not fear the repercussions of doing right. Following Danjong's funeral, he moved his family to an undisclosed location to prevent retaliation. Eom Chun-mi is recognized as the 30th descendant of Eom Heung-do of the Yongwol Eom clan, which adds a personal connection to the historical narrative portrayed in the film. The casting of Eom Chun-mi is particularly noteworthy as her theatre company, Cheongnyeon Theatre, is also linked to actor Yoo Hae-jin, who plays Eom Heung-do in the film. Their mutual roots in Cheongju and Yoo's early acting experiences there led to the opportunity, and after an audition process initiated by director Jang Hang-jun, Chun-mi's participation was confirmed. This connection highlights the intertwining of personal heritage and artistic expression within the context of South Korean historical cinema.
