Children Seeking Summer Jobs Rush to Available Positions
Young people in Estonia are rushing to apply for summer jobs, with an unprecedented number of candidates this year.
As summer approaches, a significant number of young people in Estonia are actively seeking summer employment, resulting in a rush for available positions. Many of these young applicants have some prior work experience or are taking advantage of job opportunities through their parents' workplaces. Notably, a local company welcoming cruise tourists, Deneesti, received an overwhelming response to their call for summer workers, attracting over 150 candidates within 24 hours, prompting them to close applications early.
According to Jarek Riska, a representative from Deneesti, the interest in summer job opportunities has skyrocketed compared to previous years, highlighting a notable increase from a typical maximum of 40 applicants to this year's substantial turnout. The company was surprised by the level of enthusiasm shown by young job seekers, particularly those aged 15 to 17, indicating a strong desire among the youth to earn pocket money during the summer months. While they could not conduct interviews with all candidates, they plan to engage with 70 applicants this year and aim to increase hiring even further next summer.
This surge in interest may reflect broader economic factors or a shift in the attitudes of young people towards work experiences, as they seek to gain skills and earn income during the school break. It also reinforces the importance of summer employment as a valuable opportunity for youth to contribute to local businesses and develop work readiness skills, setting a precedent for future summer job seekers in Estonia.
