More Young People Expected to Be Involved in Student Employment This Summer

Latvia's NVA calls on employers to offer summer jobs for students, anticipating increased participation compared to previous years.

The Latvian Employment Agency (NVA) is encouraging employers to register job opportunities for students this summer, as the number of participants in student employment programs has been steadily increasing over the years. In the previous year, 832 employers provided jobs for around 10,000 students, including approximately 70 Ukrainian students, reflecting a growing interest in summer employment among youths. The NVA is seeking to further enhance opportunities in this program for upcoming seasons.

According to Svetlana Ovčaruka, deputy director of the Agency's Employment Activities Department, the most popular jobs among students have included roles such as assistants, salespeople, teacher's aides, landscape workers, and waitstaff. However, Ovčaruka noted a shift in trends, as more modern and interesting professions have emerged, including roles such as computer engineering assistants, architecture aides, graphic designers, quality management system specialists, information systems designers, and lawyers, indicating an evolving job market.

Despite the growing number of available positions, Ovčaruka pointed out that student interest in these summer jobs exceeds the jobs available, suggesting a demand that outstrips supply. This year, the funding allocated for this initiative has been increased to better meet the needs and interests of students, highlighting the importance of supporting youth employment in Latvia's economic landscape and ensuring that all interested students have the opportunity to gain work experience during the summer months.
