An exceptionally tough competition for summer jobs - 'It's hard to find', say young people

Young people in Tampere are finding it increasingly difficult to secure summer jobs, amidst record-high application numbers but dwindling job availability.

Young people in Finland, particularly in Tampere, are reporting significant challenges in securing summer employment as competition intensifies. Many have submitted numerous applications without success, and the number of applications has surged, with large employers like Hesburger seeing a doubling in submissions compared to the previous year. However, the availability of work opportunities has decreased, exacerbating the difficulties faced by young job seekers.

The worsening job landscape is highlighted by a survey from Suomen Yrittäjät, which reveals that the number of summer job positions available in small and medium-sized enterprises has nearly halved over the last two years. This contraction in job offers casts a shadow over the hopes of many young people seeking to gain work experience during their summer break. As a consequence, these fluctuations in the job market are contributing to a growing sense of uncertainty and anxiety among Finnish youth.

According to a recent youth barometer, young people's overall satisfaction with their lives has plummeted to historically low levels, with many expressing significant stress over employment prospects. About 70 percent of respondents in the survey indicated feelings of pressure associated with job hunting, reflecting a broader trend of declining mental well-being among today's youth. The combination of tougher competition for limited positions and increased emotional stress raises important questions about the future outlook for young people entering the labor force in Finland.
