Companies report now even tens of thousands of summer job applications - HR Director: "People's desperation shows"

Many large employers in Finland have seen a drastic increase in summer job applications compared to last year, highlighting a rising desperation among job seekers.

The number of summer job applications has surged for many major employers in Finland, as reported by Yle's survey. For instance, the fast-food chain Hesburger has experienced a more than twofold increase in applications compared to the previous year, with plans to hire around a thousand summer workers. Similarly, Lidl has seen a 45% increase in applications for its roughly 1,000 positions available, while the amusement park Linnanmäki reported a 25% growth and the retail chain Puuilo noted a 20% rise in applicant numbers.

Hesburger and Puuilo are actively seeking to hire more candidates than last year, indicating a slight uptick in recruitment. However, Hesburger's HR manager, Henna Pursiheimo, remarked that while there is a significant increase in applications, the number of hires will not grow at the same pace as applications due to the high unemployment rate and decreased job offerings. This mismatch hints at a challenging job market where many applicants have higher qualifications than the positions being offered, further indicating the current economic conditions in the job market.

Employers report that many applications are coming from highly qualified individuals, including those with doctoral degrees, demonstrating the impact of rising unemployment and limited job openings. This trend reflects a broader issue within Finnish society where the quest for summer jobs reveals deeper concerns about job security and economic stability, as more people resort to applying for lower-skilled positions in these challenging times.
