More young people are planned to be involved in student employment this summer

Employers are encouraged to register summer job opportunities for students, with participation on the rise, including a notable number of Ukrainian students.

The State Employment Agency (NVA) of Latvia is urging employers to register job openings for students during the summer. Last year, around 10,000 students were employed through this program, with 832 employers participating, and approximately 70 of those students were Ukrainian. The trend shows an increasing number of participants over the years, indicating a growing engagement of young people in the labor market during the holiday period.

Svetlana Ovฤaruka, the Deputy Director of the Employment Programs Department, highlighted the most popular positions among student workers, which include helpers, sales assistants, teacher assistants, landscapers, and waiters. However, she also noted that in 2025, there were newer and more interesting professions available for students, such as computer engineering, architecture assistance, graphic design, quality management specialists, information systems designers, and lawyers, suggesting a diversification of employment opportunities in the market for young workers.

Despite the growth in job offerings, student interest remains significantly higher than the available positions. To address this gap, there has been an increase in funding this year aimed at ensuring all interested students can find summer employment, reflecting a proactive approach from the government to engage the youth in professional experiences and mitigate unemployment rates among them.
