These Streets in the Old Town Are Better Avoided This Year: The Mayor Identified the Major Renovation Areas
Renovation work has begun on several streets in Vilnius's Old Town, with the mayor highlighting key areas experiencing significant disruption.
In Vilnius's Old Town, street renovation projects have officially commenced, drawing attention from residents and officials alike. Mayor V. Benkunskas has pinpointed three major locations where construction will result in considerable temporary inconveniences for locals: J. Basanavičius Street, Trakų Street, and Vokiečių Street. The mayor noted that the rainwater drainage system on J. Basanavičius Street is approximately 80% complete, while work on the retaining wall and stairs near Mindaugo Street has also started. Additionally, preparatory works are underway on Trakų Street, where they are marking the route and laying foundations as part of the first phase of renovations.
The mayor explained that the delay in commencing these works, which only began this past Monday, was due to frozen ground conditions, which in some areas reached up to one meter deep. He expressed gratitude to the citizens of Vilnius for their patience during this disruptive period. The announcement has evoked a mixed response from the community; some residents are pleased to see these streets finally being addressed and improved, while others have expressed frustration over the inconveniences, the perceived failure to adhere to renovation schedules, and other related issues.
As the city undertakes these ambitious renovation projects, local feedback will be crucial in managing public sentiment and ensuring that the works proceed smoothly. The renovations aim not only to enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of these historic streets but also to improve the overall urban infrastructure within Vilnius's cherished Old Town.
