Drivers will need patience: due to major repairs - traffic restrictions on this street
A street renovation project in Vilnius will impose temporary traffic restrictions starting March 21, with archaeological investigations set to occur.
A significant street renovation project is being undertaken by the Vilnius Development Company, focusing on modernizing infrastructure while preserving the historical character of the area. To prepare for this project, small-scale archaeological research will take place from March 21 to March 31, prompting the need for temporary traffic restrictions in the affected area.
These restrictions will specifically affect a segment of Vilnius Street between Liejyklos and Benediktinių streets, where traffic will be prohibited along a narrow section adjacent to buildings numbered 28 and 37. During the restriction period, vehicles will be rerouted through alternate roads including Liejyklos, Šv. Ignoto, and Benediktinių streets, though pedestrians and cyclists will still be allowed to navigate along one side of the restricted area.
It's noteworthy that this narrow section of Vilnius Street contains remnants of the city's defensive wall, including part of the Vilnius (Vilija) gates tower and an associated brick bridge, underscoring the historical significance of the site. The renovation project, therefore, not only focuses on contemporary needs but also aims to highlight and preserve the cultural and historical essence of this historic area.
