After winter – activity in Vilnius Old Town: road workers have started work on the streets

Vilnius is beginning street renovation work, including a rainwater drainage system, after a delay caused by frozen ground during winter.

The city of Vilnius is seeing a resurgence of activity in its Old Town as road workers have commenced significant street renovation projects. According to the mayor, approximately 80% of the rainwater drainage system has been installed on J. Basanavičiaus Street, reflecting progress in efforts to bolster the infrastructure. Additionally, demolition work on retaining walls and stairs along Mindaugo Street has begun, indicating a comprehensive approach to urban improvements.

Preparatory works are underway on Trakų Street, specifically from Dominikonų Street to Pranciškonų Street, where the path is being marked and a foundation is being constructed for future enhancements. This initiative is aimed at revitalizing the area and ensuring a better environmental infrastructure capable of managing rainwater. In parallel, the second stage of repairs on Vokiečių Street is also focused on setting up a rainwater management system, highlighting the city's commitment to improving its drainage systems and utilizing existing materials like the old paving stones for sustainability.

The mayor noted that these street renovations were initially delayed until March 16 due to frozen ground conditions, which in some areas reached depths of up to one meter. With these renovations, the city aims not only to improve the aesthetic of the Old Town but also to address functional urban challenges, paving the way for a more sustainable and accessible environment for residents and visitors alike.
