On Monday in Lithuania – new heat record: it announces where and how much it warmed up

Lithuania set a new heat record with temperatures reaching 14.6 °C in Alytus and Druskininkai, surpassing the previous record.

Lithuania experienced an unprecedented rise in temperatures, with Alytus and Druskininkai recording 14.6 °C on Monday, the highest temperature ever documented on this date in the country. This new record exceeds the previous high of 14.1 °C set only a week earlier on March 16, 2024, in Varėna. The rise of half a degree marks the fifth consecutive heat record set this month, highlighting a concerning trend in temperature increases across the nation.

Meteorologists report that 2024 has already seen six new high-temperature records established in Lithuania, reflecting a significant trend where heat records are being broken more frequently in recent years. Data indicates that in 2025, there were 23 heat records, 18 in 2024, 16 in 2023, and only 6 in 2021. This escalation in temperature records raises questions about the ongoing impacts of climate change, as the frequency of high-temperature records in the past five years has risen notably, being recorded eight times more often than cold weather records.

Looking ahead, weather forecasts suggest that while the recent record-breaking temperatures are remarkable, they may not be sustained, with expected temperatures for Tuesday ranging between 8 to 13 degrees Celsius. This indicates a potential fluctuation in weather patterns as Lithuania continues to grapple with climate variability, signifying the importance of ongoing monitoring and responses to these changing conditions.
