Fifth in a Row: Heat Records Become Routine
Lithuania has recorded a new high-temperature record for March 16, reaching +14.6 °C in Alytus and Druskininkai, marking the sixth record this year.
Lithuania has recently experienced an unusual weather pattern as it set a new high-temperature record for March 16, with Alytus and Druskininkai reporting temperatures of +14.6 °C. This marks a significant increase from the previous record of +14.1 °C set just two years earlier in Varėna. The increasing frequency of these temperature records highlights a concerning trend of rising temperatures in the region, with this being the sixth record set in just the current year alone.
In the past few years, the trend of high-temperature records in Lithuania has drastically outpaced that of cold records. Over the last five years, the country has measured high-temperature records eight times more frequently than cold records, indicating a potential shift in climate patterns. Comparatively, the number of high-temperature records in previous years has also been notable, with 23 records in 2025, 18 in 2024, 16 in 2023, 13 in 2022, and 6 in 2021, suggesting a consistent warming trend in the region.
Looking forward, the forecast for the coming days indicates that temperatures will continue to rise, reaching between 8 and 13 °C in some areas and 5 to 7 °C along the coastline. However, it is unlikely that another record will be broken soon, as the record for March 17 stands at +17.1 °C, recorded in 2012 in Varėna. This situation raises questions about the implications of climate change and how it affects local weather patterns, as Lithuania grapples with increasingly frequent temperature extremes.
