A new heat record measured on March 13, another may come

Lithuania has recorded a new heat record for March 13, surpassing the previous record set 19 years ago.

On March 13, Lithuania experienced a new heat record, with temperatures rising to significantly higher levels than recorded in previous years. The previous record, set 19 years ago in Lazdijai, was 15.1 °C, which was noticeably cooler than today's readings. This follows a similar trend observed on March 12, where temperatures in Druskininkai reached 18.1 °C.

This year marks the third occurrence of extreme high temperatures being registered, signaling a potential change in climate patterns in Lithuania. In recent years, the frequency of heat records has notably increased; for instance, in 2025 there were 23 such records, while only six were noted in 2021. The past five years have seen record high temperatures recorded eight times more frequently than record low temperatures, highlighting a concerning trend towards warmer weather in the region.

Looking ahead, forecasts suggest that another high temperature record may be set on the following day, March 14, with expected highs ranging between 11 to 18 °C across various parts of Lithuania. Given that the current record is around 14.0 °C, it appears almost guaranteed that this benchmark will be surpassed, further emphasizing the unusual warmth for this time of year in Lithuania.
