Several dozen grassland fires extinguished in Latvia in the last three days
Over 50 grassland fires have been extinguished in Latvia in just three days, with one person injured from the incidents.
In the past three days, firefighters in Latvia have successfully extinguished 55 grassland fires, highlighting an urgent need for fire safety awareness in the region. The State Fire and Rescue Service reported that one fire in Ķekavas pagasts resulted in an injury, prompting immediate medical attention to the victim. The incident involved burning grass from the previous year across a one-hectare area, illustrating the extent of fire hazards during the dry seasons.
Additionally, the firefighters responded to a significant 5000 square meter fire in Kūku pagasts, where strong winds carried sparks to a nearby shed, igniting it. Quick action by the fire brigade prevented the flames from spreading further and resulted in minimal damage to the shed. This incident, alongside other related fires, sheds light on the precarious situation many rural areas face during dry weather conditions, necessitating prompt firefighting efforts and community education on fire safety.
Moreover, three forest fires were also extinguished, with the largest taking place in Ķekava, where firefighters managed to control the blaze affecting 2400 square meters of forest floor within two hours. On Sunday, rescue teams responded to a residential fire in Vārkavas pagasts, which prompted the evacuation of the resident before the firefighters arrived. These recent incidents underscore the importance of vigilance and preparedness in combating fire risks, as climate factors contribute to an increase in such occurrences across Latvia.
