The Nevėžis River water level in Panevėžys reached a dangerous limit over the weekend
This past weekend, the Nevėžis River in Panevėžys reached a concerning height of 4.03 meters, though no direct threat to residents or infrastructure was reported.
Over the weekend, the water levels of the Nevėžis River in Panevėžys rose due to the lifting of the Ekrano Reservoir's gates by 63 cm, resulting in a measurement of 4.03 meters at the water monitoring station. This height is considered the threshold for dangerous water levels hydrologically; however, local officials, including Panevėžys City Municipality administration director Giedrius Šileika, stated that there is no immediate threat to local residents or infrastructure. Such seasonal fluctuations in river levels are typical during spring.
Despite some minor flooding in areas that are normally inundated in spring, there were no adverse impacts reported on inhabited buildings, city infrastructure, or safety for the local population. The most significant water level changes occurred in areas of the Nevėžis Basin outside of the city limits, while conditions within Panevėžys remained stable and manageable. Experts closely monitored the situation throughout the weekend, ensuring that hydrological indicators were assessed, and observed that by Sunday, the water levels in the Nevėžis River began to gradually decrease.
The prompt response and monitoring efforts by municipal specialists reflect the city's preparedness for such seasonal weather events and their ability to manage potential flood risks effectively. The authorities are maintaining vigilance as the situation evolves, ensuring that residents are kept informed and safe during this seasonal phenomenon that can lead to such water level changes in rivers.
