From Actor to Painter... There is a 'Clown' in Park Shin-yang's Exhibition
Park Shin-yang showcases his second solo exhibition, blending visual art with theatrical elements, at the Sejong Center in Seoul.
Park Shin-yang's second solo exhibition, titled 'Park Shin-yang's Exhibition Show: The Fourth Wall,' opened on May 6 at the Sejong Center's art museum in Jongno, Seoul. Unlike typical art exhibitions, the venue is filled with familiar music, and the artworks are displayed against a backdrop of rough green-painted walls, creating an intimate and studio-like atmosphere. The exhibition features actors dressed as circus clowns who interact with visitors, alternately becoming the focus and the background of the artworks, which adds a theatrical flair to the viewing experience.
Transitioning from a successful acting career to the world of painting, Park Shin-yang has been creating art for the past decade and continues to thrive as a painter and author. His latest exhibition showcases several of his representative pieces, including 'Donkey,' 'Self-Portrait,' 'Bullfighter,' and 'Apple.' Alongside the exhibition, he has published a book, 'Discovery of Emotion,' which candidly reflects his artistic journey and thoughts. During the interview with Hankyoreh at the Sejong Center, Park Shin-yang actively engaged with visitors, keenly observing their reactions to both his paintings and the unique theatrical elements of the exhibition.
Emphasizing the importance of accessibility in art, Park expresses his concern about the barriers many people feel when approaching art. He designed this exhibition to serve as a bridge between storytelling and visual art, incorporating actors to evoke the spirits of the artist's workspace. By blending theatrical performances with his artwork, Park aims for visitors to leave with a nuanced impression that combines the theatrical and the artistic, fostering a deeper connection with art and encouraging open discussions about creativity and expression.
