Germane reaches the highest ever position in the history of independent Latvia in alpine skiing
Latvian skier Jennifer Germane achieved sixth place in the World Cup slalom competition in Sweden, marking the highest position in independent Latvia's alpine skiing history.
Latvian alpine skier Jennifer Germane made history on Sunday by finishing sixth in the World Cup slalom event held in Sweden, which is recognized as the highest achievement for independent Latvia in this sport. Germane's performance was notable as she improved from her initial 13th place ranking after the first run, starting the second run in 12th place. Eventually, she secured a position that only five other competitors from the following twelve managed to surpass in the cumulative timing from both runs.
In the competition, Germane faced tough opposition, particularly from American skier Mikaela Shiffrin, who claimed a decisive victory with a time of 1 minute and 43.35 seconds. Shiffrin's victory margin over Germany's Emma Aicher was 0.94 seconds, while Switzerland's Wendy Holdener completed the podium in third, one second behind Shiffrin. Germane's impressive performance, highlighted by her fourth-best finish time in the second run, resulted in her finishing just 1.85 seconds behind the champion, showcasing her potential in the sport.
Prior to this stellar performance, Germane also competed in the Olympic Games a month ago and had participated in her last World Cup event two months prior. This recent achievement not only signifies a personal milestone for Germane but also represents a significant moment for Latvia in the realm of winter sports, potentially inspiring future athletes in the country to pursue competitive skiing.
