12 Drunk Drivers Caught on Latvia's Roads on Saturday
In the past 24 hours, 12 drivers were caught operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol in Latvia according to the State Police.
The State Police of Latvia reported that twelve drivers were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol over the past day. The distribution of infractions showed that six drivers were caught in the Vidzeme region, with two each in the Riga region and Latgale, and one each in Zemgale and Kurzeme. This indicates a worrying trend in the enforcement of traffic laws regarding alcohol consumption while driving.
Alongside the incidents of drunk driving, the police also recorded 211 cases of speeding across the country. The highest number of speed violations was noted in Vidzeme (68), followed by Kurzeme (62), Latgale (43), Zemgale (28), and the Riga region (10). These statistics highlight ongoing challenges in ensuring road safety and compliance with traffic regulations, stressing the importance of monitoring and enforcing safe driving practices to prevent accidents.
In total, there were 523 administrative decisions made regarding traffic violations within the same period, indicating a robust enforcement effort by the authorities. The police are taking serious actions, including the initiation of two administrative proceedings and ten criminal ones related to drunk driving, which could lead to vehicle confiscations in certain cases. This rigorous approach reflects the governmentβs commitment to improving traffic safety in Latvia and addressing the serious issue of impaired driving.
