A severe winter emergency in Babahoyo, Ecuador, has resulted in the first reported death in the area, where Víctor Germán Villagómez Valencia, a 56-year-old man, was found dead in his flooded home. The incident occurred early on Saturday morning, and rescuers discovered Villagómez in his residence, which was inundated due to heavy rainfall that led to critical flooding levels in the neighborhood, impacting numerous properties.

Authorities reported that the flooding resulted from a combination of overflowing waters and significant accumulation, causing the area to be particularly vulnerable. Villagómez's death was suspected to be related to the use of sleep medication he took the night before, which may have rendered him unaware of the rising water in his bedroom as he slept, leading to drowning.
