One dead and more than 5,000 affected by flooding in Babahoyo: river recorded a historic level of 7.15 meters above sea level

In Babahoyo, Ecuador, severe flooding has affected over 5,000 families, with one confirmed fatality and historic river levels recorded at 7.15 meters above sea level.

Babahoyo, in the Los Ríos province of Ecuador, is facing a critical flooding situation due to severe winter weather. Local authorities, led by Mayor Gustavo Barquet, have reported that over 5,000 families have been impacted by the overflowing rivers in the region, particularly the Babahoyo, which reached an unprecedented level of 7.15 meters above sea level, surpassing the previous historical maximum of 7.10 meters. This rapid rise in water levels has transformed the local landscape and left many rural areas effectively isolated.

The flooding has particularly devastated rural parishes such as Pimocha, Febres Cordero, La Unión, and Caracol, where access to these areas has become severely challenging. The local government has indicated that ongoing issues with transportation and accessibility hinder the delivery of essential supplies to affected residents. Many families are in dire need of assistance, and it has become crucial for relief efforts to reach these isolated communities.

In response to the crisis, the municipality has initiated the immediate relocation of families from particularly hard-hit areas like El Salto and Barreiro to a temporary shelter set up for those displaced. This approach aims to provide safety and necessary resources to the victims of this disaster as the local authorities work to manage the flood's impact and assess further needs for assistance and rebuilding efforts afterwards.
