Neighborhoods of Babahoyo continue to be flooded this Saturday

Heavy rainfall continues to cause significant flooding in various neighborhoods of Babahoyo, Ecuador, particularly affecting the capital of the Los Ríos province.

The winter season has wreaked havoc in Los Ríos province, with Babahoyo's neighborhoods experiencing severe flooding. As of Saturday, March 14, various areas remained inundated, with water levels rising to knee height. Significant flooding has been reported in the Barrio Lindo area and central zones around Vargas Machuca, Bolívar, and Eloy Alfaro, raising concerns among residents. Videos captured by the Ecu911 system showed the extent of the flooding, including images of individuals navigating submerged streets.

The impact of the continuous rainfall has led to widespread displacement and emergency situations throughout the province. As of March 12, about 46,716 people have been reported affected by the floods, with the tragic report of 11 fatalities attributed to these adverse weather conditions. In response to the escalating situation, the National Government, through the National Risk Management Secretariat, has declared a National Emergency lasting sixty days to facilitate disaster response and aid for those affected, underscoring the severity of the flooding crisis in Babahoyo and beyond.

The situation also calls for urgent attention from local authorities and humanitarian organizations to provide necessary assistance and resources to the affected populations. As the rainy season progresses, proactive measures and resources will be vital in mitigating further devastation and ensuring the safety and well-being of the impacted residents in Babahoyo and surrounding areas.
