Rains and river overflows cause flooding in Babahoyo and other cantons of Los Ríos
Intense rainfall and overflowing rivers have resulted in significant flooding and infrastructural damage across the Los Ríos province in Ecuador.
Los Ríos province, particularly its cantons including Babahoyo, has been severely impacted by the ongoing winter season, with reports indicating 110 adverse events between January and March. The Secretaría de Gestión de Riesgos has documented 3,755 individuals affected, including 211 who have been rendered homeless, and significant damage to housing and agricultural land, with two homes destroyed and 63 hectares of crops affected.
The declaration of a regional emergency on February 27 highlights the severity of the impacts across the provinces of Guayas, Esmeraldas, El Oro, Manabí, Santa Elena, Loja, and Chimborazo, underscoring the strain on local populations and infrastructure. The heavy rains and swollen rivers have necessitated the suspension of transit on key routes, particularly on the E-25 highway, indicating a major disruption to mobility and local economies.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as they respond to this humanitarian crisis, focusing on aid distribution and road repairs while assessing the long-term implications for communities affected by such natural disasters. The overall effects on livelihood, safety, and the economy are profound, calling for immediate and sustained intervention efforts to aid recovery and build resilience against future events.
