Inmet expands alert for intense rains across all of Rio Grande do Norte

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued an expanded yellow alert for intense rain across all cities in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, advising residents to take precautions from the night of the 13th through the 14th.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) in Brazil has enhanced its warning system to include all municipalities of the Rio Grande do Norte state due to forecasts of intense rainfall. This expanded alert comes after initial warnings were issued for 67 cities and is valid from midnight on Friday, the 13th, to the end of Saturday, the 14th. Residents are advised to stay informed about potential flooding and other hazards associated with severe weather conditions.

The alert level has been classified as yellow, indicating a low level of severity but nonetheless a potential danger due to the predicted rain volumes which may reach between 20 to 30 millimeters per hour, translating to a potential total of up to 50 millimeters in a single day. Additionally, the forecast calls for strong winds of 40 to 60 km/h, which could result in minor disturbances like power outages and the falling of tree branches, as well as the possibility of electrical discharges.

To mitigate risks during these conditions, Inmet has provided guidelines such as avoiding sheltering under trees due to the slight risk of falling branches and electrical discharges, steering clear of parking vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs, and abstaining from using plugged-in electronic devices. The institute has encouraged the public to remain vigilant and to seek further information or assistance if needed during this weather event.
