The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a red alert for heavy rain in 36 cities of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, valid until the end of Monday, warning of major risks including flooding and landslides.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) in Brazil has issued a red alert for severe rainfall across 36 cities in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This alert indicates a significant danger, forecasting rainfall exceeding 60 millimeters per hour or more than 100 millimeters in a single day. Residents in the impacted areas are urged to take precautions due to the potential for severe flooding and landslides, particularly in vulnerable regions.

In addition, the majority of the municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte, 166 out of 167, are under an orange alert for lower intensity rainfall. This orange alert still signifies a risk but is less severe than the red alert. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant as the weather conditions could lead to adverse effects, even if the danger level is not as high.

Inmet has provided specific recommendations for safety during this period of severe weather, advising people to disconnect electrical appliances and main power sources, stay indoors, and remain alert for any changes in slope stability. These proactive measures are crucial in minimizing risks associated with the potential flooding and landslides expected from the forecasted heavy rain.
